I would try manually installing the XP audio driver as follows if the auto install doesn't work.
This SoftPaq contains the audio driver for the desktop models and operating systems listed that have the ADI AC97 Integrated Digital Audio Controller.
Download and run the above file. If it gets the sound to work automatically, great. If not...
Close out of any error windows.

Go to the device manager and click on the Multimedia Audio Controller needing the driver.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Then click on Have Disk, and browse to: C:SWSetupsp27103SMAXWDMW2k_XPsmwdmCH2 setup information file, and select the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device from the list, and see if the driver installs that way.
