I'm keen to understand why digital downloads for a game are more expensive than buying a physical copy? This doesn't make sense to me, as it's exactly the same content but with a physical disc the games company has to manufacture, store, ship and manage all the stock.

Question: Why are digital download titles so much more expensive than discs, even for older games?

Why Is Digital Download More Expensive

I get the convenience thing. I get that people want to build their libraries etc. But some of the prices for games on the Xbox Store seem extortionate... Even for those games that have been out for over a year or more.

I just don't get it. I wanted to play Rise of the Tomb Raider when it released. My options were to download from the Xbox store for £54.99 (!!) or order brand new on Amazon for £32.99 with next day delivery (far more reasonable). Same deal with Fallout 4 more or less, including the preorder.

I recently felt like checking out Mad Max. £49.99 on the xbox store. Got it brand new on Amazon for £19.99 including next day delivery. It arrives tomorrow. I've saved £30 and can even sell it once I'm done.

I'm just not sure why digital prices are through the roof, and why people keep paying them. I'd buy games a lot more online if they were realistically priced. I feel like I'm missing something though... what's their angle?

EDIT: Some great answers here, thanks. A few people have lambasted me for posting something which has been asked before quite a lot. One of the wonderful things about Reddit is that it's an open community for open discussion, and it's got an excellent system for filtering out irrelevant content - if you find my post repetitive or useless, by all means downvote it. The fact that this has over 200 votes and nearly as many comments is proof that this issue is still contentious and a subject of some debate, however. There's nothing wrong with bringing up a familiar issue to keep discussion around it alive - Reddit is a living, breathing hub where people come to discuss and share opinions, not some dusty old archive to trawl for old material. I didn't repost intentionally, and don't believe that others do so intentionally - I simply don't frequent this sub and it's an issue that has recently become of particular interest to me, so I asked Reddit for a bit of current live debate. Turns out people want to talk about it. If you don't, or think my post is irrelevant, just downvote it and have a nice day.
